The one sentence that should anchor the decision comes from the 4049 syllabus itself: the syllabus prepares students adequately for A-Level H2 Mathematics, where strong algebraic manipulation is required. That is the door in question. A student who drops A Maths and later wants a JC subject combination built on H2 Maths is attempting the A-Level's algebra on an E Maths foundation, which is possible and painful in equal measure.
The honest screen is not is my child clever, it is does the likely path run through H2 Maths or a numerate poly diploma, engineering, computing, the quantitative sciences, and does the child cope with abstraction at Sec 2 level without misery. A definite humanities path can skip it guiltlessly, and note the grade requirement fine print: JC admission needs A1 to D7 in one Mathematics, either E or A Maths, so the JC gate itself does not demand both.

If engineering, computing or the sciences are live possibilities, keep A Maths and support it early, because the calculus foundation is far cheaper to build at sixteen than to improvise at seventeen in JC. And if your child keeps it, respect the syllabus's own warning that omitted working loses marks: A Maths rewards students who write their reasoning, which is a habit, and habits are exactly what tuition and practice can build on schedule.
