The gate changed decisively: MOE's September 2024 announcement lets students who score AL1 or AL2 in Mother Tongue, or Distinction or Merit in HMT at PSLE, take Higher Mother Tongue at Secondary 1 from 2026 regardless of their overall PSLE score. The old rule demanded a strong overall score too, so the new one is a clean bet on language strength alone, and it widens the HCL pipeline exactly as intended.

The compounding is real for the strongest students: HCL priority at SAP school posting, the aggregate and bonus machinery at O-Level, and for those who keep going, CLEP at JC with bonus points beyond the cap. Dropping HMT along the way is a school by school conversation, handled on workload and performance evidence, which is one more reason to enter it deliberately rather than by default.
Higher Chinese is the subject where I most often see the right child in it for the wrong reason, enrolled at Sec 1 because the PSLE grade allowed it and the family felt the door should not be wasted, and by Sec 3 the subject everyone chose out of duty is the one eating the timetable. A door you can enter is not a door you must enter, and the new entry rule will put more borderline families exactly at this decision.
My honest screen is enjoyment carrying capacity: a child who reads Chinese content by choice will find HMT a multiplier, the bonus points and the E8 safety net all arriving on top of a subject they would half do anyway. A child who merely survived to AL2 will find it a tax, and the two bonus points rarely outweigh four years of Sunday resentment. So decide on the child's relationship with the language, revisit at Secondary 2 with real evidence, and remember the standard MT route still leads everywhere, just without the multiplier or the tax.

No. MOE's rules bar both Higher MT and MT of the same language in one aggregate computation, so if Higher Chinese takes the L1 slot, Chinese cannot also fill a relevant subject slot, a detail that changes the maths for students carrying both.
