Cut-Off Points Are Last Year's Weather, Not This Year's Forecast

PSLE score ranges show the first and last student admitted last year, they fluctuate, and meeting them guarantees nothing. How to read COPs without the anxiety.

What the number actually measures

MOE defines the score ranges precisely: they show the scores of the first and last student admitted to each school in the previous year through S1 Posting. That is all. A cut off point is not a standard the school set, it is where last year's demand happened to land, the product of that cohort's results and that cohort's choices.

MOE attaches two warnings in its own words: the ranges serve only as a reference, since COPs can fluctuate by a few points year on year depending on each cohort's results and school choices, and meeting the COPs does not guarantee admission, because the final places at the line are settled by tie breakers, where some students on the exact score still miss out.

How to actually use SchoolFinder

  1. Read the range, not just the lower bound. The spread between first and last admitted tells you whether a school draws a wide band of scores or a narrow one, which matters for how your child will sit in the cohort.
  2. Add a buffer for the schools that matter. Since COPs move a few points between years, a school where your child's score sits exactly on last year's line is a genuine coin flip, not a lock.
  3. Compare programmes, not just numbers. Two schools with identical COPs can differ completely in CCAs, subject offerings and distance from home, and those differences will shape four years far more than one point of aggregate.
  4. Then rank by want, not by prestige arithmetic, because the posting system rewards honest ordering and all six choices exist to absorb the uncertainty.

Cut off points do to parents what stock tickers do to investors: they turn a slow, human decision into a number to refresh, and I have watched families redraw a child's entire shortlist over a one point difference in last year's weather. The COP measures the past cohort's choices, it does not measure your child, and it certainly does not measure what four years at that school would do for them.

So use the ranges the way MOE publishes them, as a reference, and spend the reclaimed energy on the questions that actually predict a good fit: how your child felt walking through the open house, the CCA they lit up about, the commute that will shape every morning for four years. A school one point out of reach is replaced in a week, a school that fits badly is endured for four years, and only one of those errors is worth the anxiety currently spent on the other.

Why do COPs move at all?

Because they are demand curves, not standards: each year's line depends on that cohort's PSLE results and school choices, per MOE, so a popular year pushes the line up and a quieter year lets it drift, with no change in the school itself.

Are there separate ranges for different Posting Groups?

SchoolFinder presents ranges reflecting how students were admitted through the posting exercise, and since schools admit across Posting Groups under Full SBB, families should read the ranges alongside the group their child is eligible for.

When is the right time to look at COPs?

Twice, and briefly: once around the P6 mid year to frame a realistic shortlist for open house visits, and once in the results week to finalise the six choices, inside the option window. Daily COP checking between those two moments improves nothing except anxiety.
