One paper, two booklets, and an assessment design where applying concepts, analysing data and communicating reasoning carry the demanding marks.

The SEAB format sets PSLE Science as a single written paper in two booklets: Booklet A, 30 multiple choice questions with four options at 2 marks each, and Booklet B, 10 to 11 structured questions at 2 to 5 marks, all compulsory, in 1 hour 45 minutes. SEAB publishes exactly two assessment objectives, and reading them explains most lost marks. The first is Knowledge with Understanding, the facts and concepts. The second is Application of Knowledge and Scientific Inquiry, and the syllabus spells out what that includes:
This is why a child who knows the textbook can still lose marks in Booklet B: the structured questions live in the second objective, where the answer must apply the concept to the scenario given and explain the reasoning, and a memorised definition dropped into an application question reads as not answering.
The most common Science complaint I hear from parents is the most revealing one: my child knew the answer but did not phrase it right. Usually the truth is subtler, the child knew the concept but did not answer the question asked, because the question wanted the concept applied to this plant, this circuit, this data table, and the child recited the general rule instead.
So change what practice looks like. After every wrong structured answer, have your child say out loud what the question was actually asking before touching the model answer, because the skill being built is reading the scenario, not memorising phrasings. And treat Booklet A with respect too, 60 of the 100 marks are MCQs at 2 marks each, where one careless misread costs as much as a structured slip. Science rewards the child who slows down, and slowing down is a trainable habit, not a personality.
SEAB states the paper assesses attainment based on the 2023 primary science syllabus for examination from 2026, so past papers from earlier years remain useful for skills practice while topic coverage should be checked against the current syllabus.

No deduction scheme appears in the format: each of the 30 multiple choice questions simply carries 2 marks with four options, so an unanswered question is the only guaranteed zero, and finishing the booklet always beats leaving blanks.
