Weak in Maths is not a diagnosis, it is a label covering four different problems with four different fixes. The symptom map that stops families buying the wrong help.

The freeze on problem sums that names this post is almost always the third row: the child owns the arithmetic but cannot translate a story into a structure, which is why more drilling of the method they already know changes nothing. The most expensive words in tuition are weak in Maths, because families act on the label instead of the cause, and I have watched the same script for three years: a child with a P4 fractions gap gets a P6 syllabus tutor, runs the whole year confused at a higher standard, and everyone concludes the child is simply not a Maths person. Nobody was wrong except the diagnosis, and the diagnosis was never made.
So spend one week on the four checks above before spending one dollar on help, and then buy precisely what the symptom needs, a patient rebuilder for fundamentals, a question reading coach for application, the right format entirely for engagement. When you do engage a tutor, hand them your diagnosis in the first conversation and watch how a good one lights up, because a tutor who knows the symptom can start working on day one, and that is the difference between buying hours and buying progress.
Often two, usually a root and its shadow: a fundamentals gap breeds an engagement problem, because nobody enjoys daily confusion. Fix them in order, the root first, and the shadow frequently fades on its own once the child starts winning again.
