Right Answers Lose Marks in Primary Science When They Answer the Wrong Question

The Science paper assesses application and inquiry, not recital, so a correct fact aimed at the wrong scenario scores nothing. The answering technique that fixes it.

Why a correct fact can earn zero

SEAB's assessment objectives for the Science paper name two abilities: Knowledge with Understanding, and Application of Knowledge and Scientific Inquiry, the second spelled out as making predictions, interpreting and analysing information, evaluating methods, and communicating explanations and reasoning. Booklet B's structured questions live in that second objective, so a memorised definition dropped onto an application question is a right fact answering a question nobody asked.

The answering technique, step by step

  1. Name what the question is testing. Before writing, the child says which concept the scenario is really about, evaporation, conductors, germination, because misdiagnosing the topic is the original sin behind most zero mark right answers.
  2. Anchor to the scenario's specifics. The answer must mention this setup, the black cup, plant B, the wet cloth, because generic answers signal the child did not read the data they were given to interpret.
  3. Write the cause and effect chain. The scoring pattern rewards linked reasoning: X happens, which causes Y, therefore Z, and each link uses the concept vocabulary precisely.
  4. Answer the exact instruction word. Explain, compare, predict and describe demand different sentences, and comparing when asked to explain leaves the actual question unanswered.

Booklet A deserves its own respect: 30 multiple choice questions at 2 marks each means careless misreads in the easy half cost as much as hard structured questions, and the same read the scenario discipline protects both halves.

The sentence I hear most from Science parents is my child knew it but phrased it wrongly, and I want to lovingly complicate it: nine times out of ten the child did not have a phrasing problem, they had a question reading problem, and the marker could not award marks for reasoning that never connected to the scenario. Phrasing drills treat the symptom, and the symptom keeps returning.

So change the practice, not the phrases. After every structured question, right or wrong, have your child say in one sentence what the question was testing and how they know, because that diagnosis step is the actual examinable skill. Do it for three weeks and the model answers start writing themselves, since a child who knows what is being asked usually knows the answer, and always knew it. The knowledge was never the problem, the aim was.

Are there really keyword lists markers look for?

The objectives reward precise concept vocabulary as part of communicating reasoning, so terms like evaporation or conductor of heat matter, but as links in an explanation, not as passwords: the keyword inside a wrong causal chain earns nothing, which is why keyword drilling alone plateaus.

How is the paper structured overall?

One paper, 1 hour 45 minutes: Booklet A with 30 MCQs worth 60 marks, Booklet B with 10 to 11 structured questions worth 40, all compulsory, assessing the 2023 primary science syllabus from 2026.
